Different academic disciplines prefer certain citation styles over others.  For example, humanities disciplines tend to prefer the MLA citation style, while the sciences might use the APA style.  Whether you are creating a bibliography (a citation list of your sources), endnotes or footnotes, consult with your professor as to which citation style they prefer for your academic work.
